A New Department in KYMA
One of the fundamental traits of Kyma has always been to focus on innovation and growing skills in order to provide its customers with an ever-expanding and integrated network of services.
Relying on the deep experience in the design of structures, piping and outfitting, the new department of Naval Architecture and Basic Design is born, expanding the range of services and skills offered by Kyma.
Naval Architecture and Basic Design
The new department will join the other three, and will cover all areas of Naval Architecture:
- Hull studies with optimization of geometries according to required performance, tonnage and centre of gravity;
- Hydrostatic and hydrodynamic calculations, with power and resistance forecasts using calculation software;
- Weights estimation and distribution;
- Stability calculations.
Detailed Calculations for Safety at Sea
As also shown by the recent chronicles, one of the fundamental points for safety at sea is stability.
Being an inherent characteristic of each craft, stability is hardly modifiable after construction if not to the detriment of overall performance and depends largely on the designer’s choices about design limits and the expected life of the project.
Through collaboration with leading shipyards in the yachtbuilding industry, Kyma has a wealth of baseline data and operational feedback for project we worked on, which can provide a rich and up-to-date basis for developing any new project.
Kyma is able to produce a stability booklet for its customers, complete with all the calculations required by flag authorities (such as Red Ensign, Malta, etc.) and classification societies (such as ABS, RINa, Lloyd’s). This document also includes the instructions for the master about seakeeping and all procedures necessary for safety under various operating and weather conditions.
All starting data is generated using the program Maxsurf and processed through macros developed in-house.
Basic Design with Experience in Executive Design
Kyma’s approach is to use all the expertise acquired over the years to integrate the executive design in the basic design, organically enriching all the experiences obtained during its activity.
This interdisciplinary and in-depth approach offers advantages because it allows an increase in the pre-production set up (a topic that is increasingly relevant in the sector) and therefore a reduction in time and costs for the construction site.
These advantages are mainly due to a number of factors directly linked to the skills of Kyma:
- The Speed of Design Iterations
Having in mind from the beginning the possible demands and needs of all the involved sectors can speed up the project times by reducing the number of required iterations (ie, the famous project spiral).
- Optimization of the Overall Project
Optimising the project means that, working within the limits of performance as per specifications, it is possible to ensure the spaces needed for the equipment, machines and plants (studied and designed in the other three departments).
